The gap we are filling
Children in South Africa do not have adequate access to engaging, high-quality digital learning content in African languages. This lack of accessible, relevant content is a significant contributor to low literacy levels in the country, and places non-English speaking children at a developmental disadvantage. In addition, children lack the tools, motivation, exposure and confidence needed to build strong African language foundations during the crucial early learning years.
Our Mission
At Limu, we prioritise storytelling, engaging visuals, and high-quality audio to deliver a fun, stimulating, and developmentally appropriate learning experience. Through a theme-based learning approach, we support early language development and promote multilingualism in a natural, enjoyable way. Early exposure to such rich language inputs has been shown to positively influence long-term academic performance by strengthening cognitive abilities such as problem-solving, memory, and critical thinking. Equally important is the confidence children build in expressing themselves as they grow, an outcome that lies at the heart of our work at Limu.
Our Core Audience
Early learners: Engaging children aged 2-9 with dynamic, age-appropriate content
Education Foundation: Equipping ECDs and foundation phase primary schools with powerful foundational language learning tools
Maximum Impact: Prioritising Quintile 1-3 schools to drive educational equity
A focus on inclusivity: Crafting content for children of all races, income levels, and linguistic backgrounds, including isiZulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans, English, isiXhosa, and more.
Our Current Focus
Expanding Access: Our primary goal is to grow our presence across South Africa, ensuring more children can benefit from our learning adventures.
Enriching Early Literacy: We are creating a new range of multilingual content for pre-readers, filling a significant void in the resources available to young learners
Collaborating for Change: We are proactively seeking and building partnerships with like-minded organisations to amplify our positive impact on children, schools, and families.
This is how we unlock the richness of languages
At Limu, we believe early language development should be as stimulating as it is educational. Our platforms use a theme-based approach to promote multilingualism through engaging content designed specifically for a child’s developmental journey. By prioritising storytelling and rich media, we make learning a language an enjoyable, everyday discovery.
Language Learning
Language Learning: Exciting language learning activities, songs and videos available for your children. Join us for a fun learning adventure! Learning content currently available include English, isiZulu, Sesotho, Afrikaans, with KiSwahili and isiXhosa coming soon.
Limu Pre-Reader
Limu Pre-Reader: This is the exciting Limu Pre-Reader, where children are able to learn the alphabet, sounds, vowels, consonants, and build up to words - in multiple languages. Pre-reading aims to assist with building strong foundational language skills that will help children when they start to learn how to read and speak in African languages and English.
This is aligned to the Department of Basic Education’s South African Literacy Strategy and Plan 2024 - 2030.
Currently available in isiZulu with more languages available later this year.
We are also excited to explore partnerships and collaboration potential with like-minded organisations. These include:
Enhanced Foundation Literacy Programs: Developing and implementing impactful, multilingual foundational language skills for ECDs and foundation phase primary school classrooms within our networks
Co-creation for a purpose: Theme-based co-creation and distribution opportunities – this would be around fun & impactful themes related to children (health and hygiene practice; financial literacy; entrepreneurship; friendship; fun; sports; family; etc)
